Besuch im Archiv der «Alpinen Geruchserinnerungen» in Tschlin

The Lower Engadine landscape has a panorama of smells in which smells are constantly renewed. In the archive in Tschlin, olfactory memories are recorded and made tangible.

Description

Agriculture has changed a lot in recent decades. "The cows no longer live directly in the village, but outside in large stables, where they are fed not only hay but also silage feed, as in the lowlands. The smell of the past has been lost."

Curdin Tones, initiator of the cultural initiative SOMALGORS74, has been looking for ways to materialize olfactory memories and thus be able to share them with others. That's why he and Philipp Kolmann have created the "Archive of Alpine Smell Memories" for SOMALGORS74. Together, they materialized the first olfactory memories and prepared them for the archive. In the archive, guests can spray scent sprays on objects or burn incense sticks - and breathe in the old hay and cow dung smell of Tschlin in real life. A total of around ten alpine olfactory memories of different people are archived. In this way, the experiences in the archive are intended to convey sensually how smells connect us with alpine culture and landscape. The collection continues to grow with olfactory memories that visitors to the archive share with Curdin.

The archive is accessible as part of workshops.
