Villa Garbald

img_4kq_fbjdcdfj
None other than the famous architect Gottfried Semper designed the «Italian country house» in 1862, which was renovated in 2004 by the architects Miller & Maranta and extended with the new building «Roccolo».
The buildings can be visited on weekly guided tours.

Description

The young Garbald couple commissioned the famous architect and professor at the Zürich Polytechnic, Gottfried Semper (1803-1879), to build their villa. Mr. Garbald was a customs' officer and Mrs. Garbald was a young author. The three-story house stands out architecturally, but still blends in well with its surroundings. Built in the style of a Lombardy country house, it is the only structure built by Semper south of the Alps. The wonderful gardens and the terrace with pergola give the Villa a southern flair.

Today, the Garbald Foundation is responsible for the operation and maintenance of this cultural jewel. The Villa was expanded and renovated in collaboration with ETH Zürich. Since 2004, the Villa has been used for scientific, business and cultural seminars and retreats. The special «spirito» of the Villa Garbald seminar centre includes cultural events and an annually changing art installation by contemporary artists with a focus on photography, which are organised in collaboration with the Bündner Kunstmuseum.
