Nurse Floria works with passion and professionalism in the surgical ward of a cantonal hospital. Her every move is perfect, she has an open ear for patients even in stressful situations and is immediately on hand in an emergency - ideally. But in the harsh reality of her unpredictable daily routine, things are often different. When she starts her late shift that day, a colleague is absent from the fully occupied, understaffed ward. Despite all the hustle and bustle, Floria looks after a seriously ill young mother and an old man desperately waiting for his diagnosis with the same care and routine as a private patient with all his extra requests. But as the night progresses, her work becomes more and more of a race against time.

Petra Volpe's new film project tackles a highly topical subject: the growing shortage of qualified nursing staff in Switzerland and worldwide. Accompanying the great Leonie Benesch as Floria through her shift means experiencing directly and breathlessly how she confronts the strains of a chronically overburdened system with almost unbelievable strength and empathy. Gripping, humanistic and respectfully light-hearted, "Heldin" is a tribute to an underestimated professional group and shows how important good care in the event of illness is for us all.
