Alte Rheinbrücke, Tavanasa

Modern reinforced concrete bridge construction in Switzerland reached an early peak in the first two decades of this century thanks to Robert Maillart's pioneering achievements. It was only with the Tavanasa Bridge that Maillart succeeded in creating a design that consistently detaches itself from the models of stone construction and illustrates the hollowing out and dissolution of the building. A debris flow destroyed the building, which in 1905 already indicated the international style. Today's bridge is still well reminiscent of Maillart's structural considerations. In the 19th century, it was considered a bridge construction achievement.
