Description
During the First World War, Austrian and Italian mountain soldiers fought on the Stilfserjoch and along the ‘rock and ice front’. To maintain Switzerland’s neutrality, Swiss soldiers were also commanded to take up positions along the border and they witnessed battles, the effects of which can still be felt today. The museum in Sta. Maria portrays this history and the perspectives of the countries involved with the help of images and models. It’s an informative place to start your hike along one of the ‘military history hiking trails’ on the Umbrail Pass or the Stilfserjoch.
