Description
For thousands of years, the Bernina Pass has provided an important regional connection between the Upper Engadine and the Valposchiavo and the adjacent Valtellina. Southeast of the pass, a striking mountain rises into the air – the Piz Campasc. The ascent to the summit and the way back takes just under two and a half hours. This makes for a nice half-day tour.
About two-thirds of the route is almost flat. Numerous lakes and ponds adorn the plateau around the pass, which is interspersed with many hills and depressions. As soon as you reach the foot of Piz Campasc, the terrain and the character of the trail change completely. Over a ridge-like shoulder and through the sloping south-east flank, you reach the summit on a narrow, partly somewhat exposed rock path.
At the top, a unique panoramic view beckons: the terrain drops into the Valposchiavo in several stages, the Piz Palü rises above Lago Bianco, and the summit ring of the Upper Engadine spreads out to the north.
Geheimtipp
Usually, it goes from Piz Campasc back to the Bernina Pass in the same way. A charming variant branches off halfway back to Lago Bianco and leads from there a little above the shore to the Ospizio Bernina railway station.
Directions
The route is signposted as a mountain hiking trail (white-red-white, difficulty level T3). The starting point is the Ospizio Bernina railway station or the slightly higher Ospizio Bernina/Albergo post bus stop. Initially on a more or less flat path, it goes to the foot of the Piz Campasc. The ascent to the summit requires attention and prudence: the path crosses some partially exposed couloirs; it is only suitable for sure-footed mountaineers with a head for heights.
