Church Surselva
Protestant Church Valendas

Description
The church was first mentioned in 1384. According to archaeological excavations, a place of worship probably already stood there in pre-Romanesque times or even in Carolingian times, i.e. more than 1000 years ago. In the period after the Reformation, a very drastic event occurred for the community: in 1594, 430 people from the parish of Valendas (Versam with the farms of Fahn, Arezen and Calörtsch) died of the plague. The area had previously comprised around 600 inhabitants. A memorial stone to the right of the entrance door commemorates this terrible time.
The Gothic choir with its octagonal baptismal font from the 15th century is striking. The pulpit under the ogee arch forms the link between the choir and the nave. It is believed to be the work of a master carpenter from the Bonadurer dynasty from Arezen (Versam).
It originally stood on the other side - part of the date is therefore concealed. Remains of the pre-Gothic nave were discovered in the nave corners on either side of the choir entrance during earlier renovations. These indicate that the former nave was almost two meters narrower than the current one.
