Historische Beweidung

Agricultural use was discontinued on the land of the SNP in 1914. Nevertheless, it is still visible from the vegetation. A part of the traditional use of the forests was the forest pasture. In order to protect the cleared meadows from excessive grazing pressure, the forests were used as home, goat, horse, ox or even winter pasture.  Around the Alps, large amounts of nutrients accumulated in the cattle's storage areas. After the abandonment of human use in the establishment of the national park, this typical nutrient accumulation was stopped, but is still detectable today. These so-called "Lägerfluren" are characterized by herbs with a more or less strong proportion of high perennials, for example Eisenhut.
