Chapel Heidiland
Kapelle Butz Mels
Description
It is the youngest chapel in the parish of Mels. The first donation to a fund for the construction of a chapel on the Vorderberg was made by Unnamed in 1892. But for a long time, the residents could not agree on the construction site. On 4 November 1928, the parish council decided to build the chapel on the current building site on "Lütschbord". Architect Johannes Scheier, St. Gallen, carried out the construction in 1938/39. The choice of the place with the view of the Falknis, Gonzen and Alvier chains, down on the Seez and wide Rhine plains, in the back on the Melserberg, was very fortunate. The buildings, tower, porch and main building also combine to form a beautiful triad. The unadorned nature of the building shows its affinity with Sargans Castle and the distant chapel of St. Georgen near Berschis. The chapel was painted by Ferdinand Gehr. On the inner back wall kneels St. Anthony of Padua. The altarpiece depicts figures from purgatory in the altar niche. The main image is the Transfiguration of Christ. The whole composition of the pictures depicts the suffering, arguing ( through John the Baptist ) and the triumphant church. The mural depicts images from the life of Christ: the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth, the Annunciation of the Shepherds, the Nativity, the Flight into Egypt and Our Lady of Sorrows. Views have so far been very divided on the artistic value and even more so on the question of whether these images inspire the people to devotion. In September 1939, the chapel was solemnly consecrated by the Most Reverend Bishop Josephus Meile of St. Gall.
