Church Disentis Sedrun
Kirche St. Placidus, Surrein
It is believed that there was already a chapel in Surrein in 1595. In 1643 the church was reconsecrated. The church of Surrein is dedicated to St. Placidus. The present church with three altars was built by the Capuchins and consecrated in 1695. In 1786 Surrein became an independent parish. In 1908 the church was completely renovated. The last major renovation took place in 1950/51.
Description
The church faces south and is built in Baroque style. It has a choir closed on three sides and a barrel vault. The high altar is made of wood and equipped with a four-column structure and is dedicated to St. Placidus. Instead of an altarpiece, the focus is on a late Gothic statue of the Mother of God. The side altars have the same structure and fit well with the main altar. All three altars were built around 1700. About 80 years later, new decorative elements were inserted. The valuable wall paintings in the shields of the choir depict scenes from the life of St. Placidus and were executed in 1697 by Gion Giachen Rieg. In 1908, the Rieg paintings in the arched vault were replaced by a painting by Nüscheler.
The bellied pulpit is decorated with rocaille decoration.
