Description
If you are looking for a mountain rich in history, Monte San Giorgio is the place for you. The entire area around the summit was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003, fossils dating back more than 200 million years come from it. The impressive museum in Meride is dedicated to this incredible history. But Monte San Giorgio is not only a historical landmark: it is also a beautiful place for hiking and admiring the panorama. The southern slopes of the mountain are covered with vineyards and the village of Meride is an enchanting place to walk. If you are looking for a sporting adventure, you can climb to the top of Monte San Giorgio for an unobstructed view of Lake Lugano. Be sure to visit a Grotto in the Mendrisiotto. These are typical informal restaurants with a small selection of local dishes, usually served outdoors on tables in the shade of trees.
