Splügen – der Treffpunkt

The wooden houses of the Walser appear sun-tanned. The stately stone houses, on the other hand, are reminiscent of Italian palazzi.

The reason for this cultural encounter is the Splügen and San Bernardino passes. For centuries, goods such as wine and silk were lined over these Alpine passes. No wonder, a railway line was also planned at the Splügen Pass – and in 1907 even a waterway: From Basel, ships were to reach Genoa – and be transported over the Splügen Pass in lock-like tubes. Nothing has come of these plans.

But famous people came to Splügen: poets like Hans Christian Andersen and painters like William Turner.
