St Lawrence Chapel

The date of construction is unknown. Excavations have shown that there was already a burial site on the hill before it was built. A first chapel probably stood as early as the 7th century, and blind arcades inside on the southern side of the tower indicate that it was built in the 11th century. In 1237, the chapel was first mentioned in a document as the parish church of Paspels when a lieutenant priest was appointed. St Lorenz was probably also the main church for the entire right side of the valley.

Excavations carried out by Walo Burkart on the southern edge of the uppermost hilltop in 1933 revealed the remains of a 1 metre thick circular wall. St. Lorenz was obviously fortified, but unlike Hohen Rätien or Jörgenberg, it did not develop into a feudal castle.

In the 13th century, the chapel belonged to the possessions of the barons of Vaz. A papal bull dated 21 April 1464 states that the patronage rights were transferred from the Vaz family to the Premonstratensian monastery of Churwalden; S. Laurentius probe Baschuals is listed there as its property; this is the last time the church is listed as ecclesia parochialis. The church in Tumegl/Tomils is mentioned as such as early as 1486. After 1513, St Lawrence is only mentioned as a chapel.
