Nobody likes teacher Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti) - neither his pupils, nor his colleagues, nor the principal. Everyone finds his pomposity and rigidity annoying. Since he has no family and nowhere to go during the 1970 Christmas vacation, Paul stays at school anyway to supervise the students who can't go home. After a few days there is only one pupil left, a 15-year-old called Angus (Dominic Sessa), a good pupil but always in danger of being expelled from school because of his bad behavior. Paul and Angus are joined by chef Mary (Da'Vine Joy Randolph) - an African-American woman who cares for the sons of the privileged and whose own son was recently killed in the Vietnam War. These three very different castaways form an unlikely Christmas family who experience comic misadventures during two very snowy weeks in New England.
