Description
39th DAVOS FESTIVAL – young artists in concert.
MUSIC | CLASSICAL MUSIC
In 1816, the writer Mary Shelley began writing an epistolary novel that tells the story of the Swiss scientist Victor Frankenstein. He succeeds in creating an artificial human being who, out of rejection and loneliness, becomes a multiple murderer. A fascinating horror novel that shows frightening parallels to the current narrative about artificial intelligence. It is also repeatedly suspected of opposing its creators and destroying humanity in the near future. In the music world, too, there is a regular discussion about whether artificial intelligence will soon be composing better and more imaginatively than humans.
Another horror story is told by the French composer Guillaume Connesson in his drama Medea. Medea is one of the most powerful and complex female characters in Greek mythology. With magical powers, she helps her husband Jason steal the Golden Fleece and fled with him to the realm of the Corinthians. There they marry and she gives birth to two sons. Later, Jason commits adultery and cheats on her with Glauke, the daughter of King Creon. Medea is beside herself with anger and passion and takes revenge in a cruel way. She kills Creon and Glauke, as well as her own children, and escapes on a dragon chariot. In his composition, Connesson lets Medea have her say expressively and sings in a monologue about passion, dominance, revenge and anger.
