MUSIC | CLASSICAL MUSIC

The composer Rita Strohl and her husband René founded the La Grange theatre in Bièvres (Essonne) in 1912. They chose this small rural town in the southern outskirts of Paris to break away from the conventions of the capital and devote themselves entirely to their new project, experimental music. René, a disturbingly enthusiastic admirer of Richard Wagner, tried to set up a kind of "Little Bayreuth" there. La Grange was a converted old mill and served as a performance venue for Strohl's latest works.

However, the project proved to be too ambitious. The First World War finally shifted the focus from artistic creation to personal survival. Strohl suffered from health problems and depression, was traumatized by the war and plagued by tinnitus. She separated from her husband and moved to Provence. After her death, she was almost forgotten and ended up in the musical nowhere. Only recently were her works recorded and thus made accessible again.
