Description
39th DAVOS FESTIVAL – young artists in concert.
MUSIC | CLASSICAL MUSIC
Work. Meditation. Dance. Drugs. The longing for the intoxicating is what drives us. Some dance themselves into ecstasy. Others lose themselves in work and surrender to the flow. The cultic use of the fly agaric has been documented in several parts of the world as early as 7000 years ago. As soon as intoxication becomes compulsion, the negative sides outweigh the negatives.
Ernest Bloch said that his intoxicating Poème mystique embodies "the world as it should be: the world we dream of, a world full of idealism, faith, fervor and hope". In his first sonata, Bloch had already expressed his fear and pain over the First World War. In an evolving movement, his poème flows rhapsodic into a context of Gregorian chant, Debussy and elements that point to the composer's ethno-Jewish roots.
