MUSIC | CLASSICAL MUSIC

Nikolai Andreyevich Roslavets was a pioneer of New Music in Ukraine and Russia. He combined the promotion of new ideas with the preservation of traditional values. This attitude brought him into the sights of the official cultural ideologues who were closely linked to the Soviet secret police, which ultimately led to a ban on his profession. In 1931 he left Moscow and worked at the Tashkent Musical Theatre. Back in Moscow, he lived from 1933 as a substitute teacher and day laborer. For many decades, Roslavets was stigmatized as an enemy of the people and was one of the outlawed composers in the Soviet Union.

Shortly after his death, representatives of the secret police searched Roslavets' home and confiscated his manuscripts. Nevertheless, Roslavets' widow managed to hide part of his work. Later, she handed over the collection to the Central State Archive for Literature and Art. It was not until 1967 that the composer's rehabilitation began.
