"Amusia" is a neuropsychological deficit that leads to the inability to perceive or make music. With Franz Kafka one can hardly speak of an amusia, but he described himself as highly unmusical. In 1911 he wrote in his diary: "The essence of my unmusicality is that I cannot enjoy music coherently, only here and there does an effect arise in me, and how rare is the one musical one." Kafka's poetry, linguistic virtuosity and rhythm nevertheless have musical qualities and inspired numerous composers to create their own works. Perhaps the most famous setting is not based on Kafka's novels, but on his letters and diaries. György Kurtag wrote down individual sentences from it in his sketchbook over the years. Some of them only take a few seconds. Short musical dramas that draw very different moods and nuances. "Their world of concise language formulas, filled with grief, despair and humour, subtlety and so much at the same time, never let me go," he once said.
