The Klezmer Kapelye around the clarinettist Franco Mettler plays Jewish tunes – cheerful and melancholic at the same time. She accompanies Jaap Achterberg's recitation of Anton Chekhov's masterful story.

The story:

The 70-year-old coffin carpenter Jakov lives with his wife Marfa in a small town. Because only a few die, the two are in a bad way. Every now and then – when a Jew is missing from the orchestra – Jakov earns a few kopecks by playing his violin as a substitute. He is constantly annoyed by the flutist Rothschild, who is playing next to him, because with him the funniest melody always sounds sad ...

Anton Chekhov:

There are few poets of the past whose work still seems as vivid as that of Anton Chekhov. The characteristics of his stories are extreme brevity, truthfulness, boldness and, last but not least, human cordiality – as in "Rothschild's Violin".
