Description
We hike on the debris field of the Flims landslide, which buried the Rhine Valley 9,500 years ago. Over the course of almost 10,000 years, a unique water and natural landscape has developed on this wasteland, as it was not usable for agriculture or other human activities. We first walk to Lake Cauma and learn where the water and its bright green-blue color comes from. Then it continues to the edge of the spectacular Rhine valley "Ruinaulta", where the water of the Rhine has eaten its way up to 500 m deep into the landslide scree and thus created the "Swiss Grand Canyon". We hike along the edge with a beautiful view of the Rhine Valley to the Conn viewing platform and then stop at the Conn restaurant. The way back is directly to the Caumasee bus stop, if you like you can also book a horse-drawn carriage (if it runs). On the tour you will learn what research has determined today about the landslide, the largest in the Alps since historical times.
