In the old hostel Chasa Chalavaina the Grisons captains held war council before the Battle of the Calven.

The Swiss Heritage Society nominates it in its guide as one of the most extraordinary hotels in Switzerland.

Description

When the soil under the stables was removed in the course of the conversion of the farm building into the hotel wing, the architect discovered remains of foundations. They turned out to be the foundations of a house that must have been built in Carolingian times, i.e. at about the same time as the nearby monastery of St. John. This means that people have been living on the site of today's Hotel Chasa Chalavaina for 1200 years. A remarkable piece of history.

The Battle of the Calven gave its name to the Chasa Chalavaina. The Romance words mean german Calven house. Two crossed swords in the tavern shield are reminiscent of the fight.
