INTRODUCTION
Among the glaciers that flow from the peaks of Bernina, the Morteratsch Glacier is one of the largest and perhaps the most easily accessible. The Caval Hut, a large hut located on the western slopes of the Morteratsch valley, is a magnificent vantage point on the glacier, but also on many peaks of the Bernina group, on the famous Biancograt ridge and on the impressive tongue of the Diavolezza.
ACCESS
Coming from Bormio, continue in the direction of Livigno, cross the Forcola pass in the direction of Pontresina until you reach the Hotel Morteratsch.

Description
ASCENT DESCRIPTION
The itinerary can be traveled between summer and the first autumn snowfalls, it is particularly spectacular (snow permitting) the last two weeks of October, when the valley explodes with the autumn colors of the larches. The starting point is the large parking lot near the Morteratsch station of the Bernina Express, the path first takes us flat towards the glacier, then begins to climb slowly on the right side of the valley into a forest. The most interesting part of the hike begins when we reach the edge of the moraine ridge, the Morteratsch glacier, much lower on our left, now shows itself in all its beauty and extension. After climbing a rocky crag through a few narrow hairpin bends, we arrive at the Capanna Boval (Chamanna da Boval) of the CAS at an altitude of 2495 m above sea level, the views of the glacier, the Diavolezza and the peaks of the Bernina group are breathtaking.
DESCENT
Same route as the climb.
NOTES
Once back in the valley, you can walk on the flat in the direction of the glacier. Along the way, signs indicate the position of the front from the time of the Little Ice Age (which ended around 1850) until today, documenting the dramatic retreat of the glacier.
