Description
Glis (Eglise = church) is still the most popular pilgrimage church in the Upper Valais. Architect Ruffiner built the choir, a side chapel for Cardinal Schiner's arch-enemy, the "Golden Gate", which is well worth seeing, as the north portal and fell to his death from the scaffolding. We leave Glis via the medieval Letzi (defensive wall) of Gamsen and walk on the new Rhone dam to Visp, the hub of Valais public transport. Just below the Ausserberg train station, we set off on the old "cultural trail" to St. German and Raron. Around 1500, architect Ruffiner came from the neighbouring Italian town of Prismell, took up residence at the foot of the rock in Raron and converted the old castle ruins into a Gothic church with a reticulated vault. In the 1970s, the impressive "Felsenkirche" was blown up in the church hill of Raron.
On the Rhone dam we continue to Gampel-Steg.
