Description
The Rotten (the Rhône) is our constant companion from Gletsch to St. Maurice. On the first hour and a half of the trail, the hiking trail steals next to the road and railway through the narrow valley to Oberwald. Still above the first village, we meet the pilgrim and travel saint in the St. Nicholas Chapel. In Oberwald we find a Church of the Holy Cross. The next 20 km in the fantastically beautiful U-valley have hardly any gradients. From each of the tanned wooden houses rises a dazzling white church tower, in the background green forests. The Rottenweg leads us to Geschinen and via a magnificent meadow path we reach Münster (monasterium, former monastery). In the parish church of the former large parish, one of the most beautiful Gothic altars in Switzerland awaits us, as well as the adjacent parish museum, the pretty little St. Peter's Church and the remarkably baroque St. Anthony's Chapel on the Biel.
