On the ascent from Thalkirch, a superb view opens up across Beverin Nature Park.
The people of the Safien Valley used to transport goods to the market in Ilanz via the Güner Lückli pass. In the forest above Val da Pitasch, the trail descends to the river Glenner and then climbs again to Vella.

Description

This long stage starts at the modernly renovated small hotel Nühus in the Safien Valley – a valley full of Walser history. Scattered hamlets like Camanaboda with its remarkable local museum bear witness to earlier settlement.

From Nühus, the path climbs through the forest to the Zalöner hut, past countless anthills and, with some luck, also deer. Soon the view opens over the Beverin Nature Park to Piz Beverin (2998 m). Across flowering meadows and whistling marmots, one reaches Güner Lückli at about two and a half hours and 2470 m – a historic crossing that once connected the Safien Valley with Pitasch and Castrisch.

A steep, partly poorly marked descent leads to Alp Gretg. The panoramic view extends over Lumnezia and Foppa to the Oberalpstock and the Tödi. Further through the forest above Val da Pitasch, after another good two and a half hours, Duvin is reached. After that, a steep path descends to Planezzas. At Peiden Bad, the Glenner – a wild river that springs between Péz Terri and Péz Scharboda and flows through the Lumnezia community – is crossed.

On the road, one climbs again to Peiden. The last hour leads below Cumbel to Vella, where the stage with over 3000 meters of elevation gain concludes.

Our favorite of this stage on the Alpine Passes Trail:

The Zalöner huts in the Safien Valley: The Zalöner huts are a typical Walser scattered settlement that shapes the landscape of the tranquil Safien Valley.
