Casa Crap, Sumvitg

Clau Maissen came from a respected bourgeois family of Sumvitg. Already at the age of 23 Clau Maissen became governor of Sumvitg, at the age of 30 Landamann of Disentis. In 1663, at the age of 42, Clau Maissen was elected for the first time as a district judge, the highest office of the Upper League. From 1665 to 1667 Clau Maissen was governor of Valtellina. Thanks to a large donation from Clau Maissen the mighty church tower of Sumvitg could be built. Politically, Clau Maissen worked against the French party and for a time led the Spanish party in leagues. His opponents filed a lawsuit against him in Disentis. Clau Maissen was murdered in Chur in 1678. The house «Casa Crap» was built in 1673 by Clau Maissen. Above the main entrance is a coat of arms of the builder. The facades and the roof were changed again and again by conversions. The precious furnishings and valuable furniture are now in the Historical Museum in Bern.
