The Catholic parish church of Maria Himmelfahrt is located in the center of Ilanz, near today's Landsgemeindeplatz.
Description
Between 1877 and 1879, the Catholic parish had its own church built and soon afterwards its own cemetery. The Church of the Assumption of Mary with rectory was built outside the walls of the town as part of the steadily growing “new town”. The 1900 census revealed a Catholic majority for the first time. In 1954, more space was created for the growing parish, the church, originally built in the neo-Gothic style, underwent a thorough renovation and was fitted with baroque altars.
Interior
- The high altar (built in 1633 and renovated in 1746) comes from Rueun. It depicts the Mother of God ascending to heaven.
- The tabernacle, bought from Siat in 1954, dates from 1693.
- The Baroque side altars (both dating from 1744) are from the monastery of St. Johann in Müstair.
- The side altar on the epistle side shows the death of St. Benedict on the altarpiece.
- The side altar on the Gospel side depicts the death of the arch-martyr St. Stephen on the altarpiece.
- The fourteen Stations of the Cross from the 18th century come from Rome.
- The old picture of the Madonna, a gift from Father Theodosius Florentini, is still preserved from the church's 1879 furnishings. It was already the altarpiece in the chapel of Casa Gronda in 1860.
