Description

The Chiesa Bianca was built by the Belgian Count Camille de Renesse according to plans by the architect Jules Rauh. Construction began on June 16, 1882 and the church, which was dedicated to St. Gaudenz, was completed on September 16 of the same year.

It is located in the Cresta district and is part of the Maloja Palace, Schweizerhaus and Belvedere ensemble - all historicizing buildings that the Count envisioned for his Alpine resort. Until 1967, it was the Catholic church of Maloja. In 1968, the Catholics consecrated their new church on the cantonal road between Chesa Alpina and Hotel Schweizerhaus and "San Gaudenzio" was desacralized. Today, exhibitions, concerts and festivals are held in the Chiesa Bianca during the summer season.
