It is believed that there was already a chapel in Surrein in 1595. The church was re-consecrated in 1643. The church of Surrein is dedicated to St. Placidus. The present church with three altars was built by the Capuchins and consecrated in 1695. In 1786, Surrein became an independent parish. The church was fully renovated in 1908. The last major renovation took place in 1950/51.

Description

The church is oriented to the south and is built in the Baroque style. It has a three-sided closed choir and a barrel vault. The high altar is made of wood and has a four-column structure, dedicated to St. Placidus. Instead of an altar painting, a late Gothic statue of the Virgin Mary is placed at the center. The side altars have the same structure and complement the main altar well. All three altars were created around 1700. About 80 years later, new decorative elements were added. The valuable wall paintings in the shields of the choir depict scenes from the life of St. Placidus and were painted in 1697 by Gion Giachen Rieg. In 1908, the Rieg paintings in the arch vault were replaced by a painting by Nüscheler. The curved pulpit is decorated with rocaille ornamentation.
