GEOTour Garmil - Station 2
A personal guide will guide you on the popular Garmil high-altitude hike and give you interesting details about the geology along the way via smartphone.

Description

We are still at the beginning of the hike, and there are already interesting details about the geology to discover. If we look to the right, we see a layer of light limestone on top of a dark limestone. But before we go into detail, it is helpful to learn a few facts about the formation of the Alps: About 200 million years ago, the primordial continent Pangaea broke apart into different plates. About 175 million years ago, when the African and Eurasian plates moved away from each other, the primordial Mediterranean Sea, also known as the Thetys, was formed between them. Layers of limestone and clay were deposited on the bottom and solidified into rock. Around 100 million years ago, however, a dramatic change began. The African plate began to move north again towards Europe. As a result, the rock was strongly pushed together, broke, folded and was pushed on top of each other.
