The monumental work by the Graubünden artist Martin Valär, painted directly on the dam wall, commemorates the passage of Russian troops under the leadership of General Suvorov in 1799.
Description
Between 4 and 7 October 1799, the early onset of winter made the Panixer Pass almost impassable.
The army of the Russian General Suvorov, which crossed the Panixer Pass, lost all its artillery on the way, almost all the horses and a third of the crew did not survive the tragedy. The soldiers got lost in the fog, plunged into abysses, died of hunger, exhaustion and cold on the way.
As a souvenir, the Ilanz power plants had the dam wall above Pigniu painted with a corresponding motif by the Bündnder artist Martin Valär.
The reservoir invites you to a leisurely circular hike of about 3 km. The path leads past the mighty waterfalls in the valley, and past a barbecue area.
