San Romerio

San Romerio is a mountain pasture at 1,800 m a.s.l. located above Lake Poschiavo in a beautiful position. From the suspended terrace, the view sweeps over the Val Poschiavo to Tirano.

Description

Nestled on a suspended terrace, 800 metres above the lake, the alpine pasture can be reached in just 20 minutes from the Viano-Piaz postbus station (from Brusio). In addition to a splendid view, the resort offers a restaurant serving typical regional specialties. Open from mid-May to the end of October, the San Romerio refuge also offers overnight accommodation.

Curiosities between history and legend

Perched on a steep rock face is the mountain church of San Romerio, consecrated in 1106. In the twelfth century, the residence of the monks of the order of the Humiliati was also located here. Three houses remain of the old hospice today. Geological erosion caused part of the ancient plateau of San Romerio to ruin downstream, while the easternmost part, which is the current one, was spared. Tradition has it that the landslide stopped right where the ancient church stood, which therefore spared the lives of the mountain dwellers and herds. In truth, this was built later right next to the abyss, in a landscape position of rare beauty, as if the ancient builders wanted to place the dwelling of God as an obstacle to a future slope.
