The award-winning building, a small school, was awarded for its simple elegance and integration into the historic village centre.
Description
Gion A. Caminada (1957) started his career as an architect and in 1992 won the competition for a school building in Duvin. Caminada's architecture embodies the synthesis of tradition and innovation, and the schoolhouse, with its church, cemetery and old school, forms a central public space. Through specific placement, it creates open courtyards to the valley and a three-sided enclosed square inside the settlement. The building is based on regional farmhouse constructions, but revolutionizes them with a wood-concrete composite system designed by engineer Jürg Conzett. This allows for unique spans and large window openings. The interior of the wooden building exudes the cosiness of a parlour.
Thanks to the innovative wood-concrete composite system by engineer Jürg Conzett, the knitted construction enables spans of up to 9 metres and braced wall surfaces with large window openings that are only supported by the corners. Inside the wooden building, the cosy atmosphere of a parlour spreads.
