Verrucano at the Upper Murg Lake

The ground along the hiking trail is red and the water hardly drains down into it. The reason for this is the wine red shale of the Verrucano. The lighter stains were caused by a chemical reaction. The shale forms a very dense subsoil and is responsible for the damming of the Murg Lakes and the formation of fens.
