Alexandre Tharaud

Bach transcribed other people's and his own works with perseverance and great artistic success. But since the "original sound" sets the tone, transcriptions have become obsolete. An inviolable original text as well as a historically correct sound are now demanded – fortunately not for Alexandre Tharaud. He succeeds in effortlessly transferring certain peculiarities of the old instruments and the performance practice that prevailed at the time to the great Steinway. His Bach interpretations testify to a deep insight into the historical dimensions of this music, and yet they sound like music from the immediate here and now. And what succeeds so magnificently here, why shouldn't it also succeed with Dukas' popular "Sorcerer's Apprentice"? A rousing virtuoso piece like the rousing waters in Goethe's ballad of the same name. In addition, the fact that Alexandre Tharaud is a congenial interpreter of Ravel has been clear at the latest since his complete recording of all of Ravel's piano works.
