Bundestag Davos – Davos celebrates 500 years of the Free State of the Three Leagues

In the name of mobility: From a farming village to a cosmopolitan city.

The canton of Graubünden is celebrating a special anniversary in 2024: exactly 500 years ago, the three federations of the Grey League, the League of the House of God and the League of the Ten Courts joined forces to form a confederation of states, the Free State of the Three Leagues, thus paving the way for the modern canton of Graubünden. The anniversary will be celebrated in Davos on 19/20 July 2024.



In the Free State of the Three Leagues, the Diets were the most important assemblies and formed the highest political authority. In the anniversary year, this old tradition will be revived, and these special festivities will be held at several locations in the canton. Davos, as the former capital of the League of Ten Courts, will celebrate its Federal Day on 20 July 2024 with lively discussions, a cheerful festive atmosphere and a varied programme.

Varied Diet:

The day begins in the morning in the large parlour in the town hall, where the extremely topical topics of "mobility" and "participation" will be dealt with with political discussions and podiums in the style of a historic Landsgemeinde. A historical procession will introduce the festivities at 2:00 p.m. The parade recreates the picture of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner from 1936 on the occasion of the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the League of Ten Judges. From the afternoon until late in the evening, a wide range of attractions and entertainment are offered on the Arkadenplatz: In a "Walserdörfji", dishes from five centuries can be tasted, various institutions and associations provide information about their activities and a wide variety of musical acts play on stage - from the yodelling choir to the Örgeliplausch to the concert of the "Sürmle".

Poetry Slam Contest:

How lively the Graubünden language is can be experienced at the local elimination of the PoetrySlam Contest. Young people from Graubünden will lend their own words to the thrilling competition of Graubünden's history and present and will take part in the contest on Friday, 19 July, as part of the traffic-free promenade. After the young people have been familiarised with the history of Graubünden over four half-days, supported in writing texts and prepared for their performance on stage, they present their performance to the audience at the Kulturplatz Davos. The best will have the chance to qualify for the U20 Poetry Slam Swiss Championship 2025.
