Concert: Basically good

In his bestseller, the Dutch author and historian Rutger Bregman puts forward the thesis that humanity is "basically good". It conveys a positive image of humanity and shows in numerous examples that we are more likely to cooperate and behave altruistically than to wilfully harm others.

Bregman claims that exceptional situations such as wars do not automatically make us barbarians. When Hitler initiated the Blitzkrieg in September 1940 and sent 348 bombers to London, he also wanted to use the threat to break people's psyches and cause panic. But contrary to expectations, people remained calm, helped each other and were there for each other.

Similar behaviors can also be observed in other war zones. However, it cannot be denied that wars provoke unnecessarily cruel acts and that people lose all their inhibitions in their bloodlust. Nevertheless, it is hopeful that there are numerous examples in history of people primarily choosing the good and striving for the common good.
