Film "Matto reigns"

The film adaptation of Friedrich Glauser's 1936 Wachtmeister-Studer crime thriller of the same name is perhaps not Leopold Lindtberg's best and best-known film; it was even a financial failure. But it turns out to be an extremely exciting narrative with a dense film noir atmosphere. While the crime plot fades into the background for long stretches, Lindtberg draws a complex network of relationships within the psychiatric clinic, which the ponderous constable Studer initially has trouble unraveling. It is not the inmates in this "brain grinding" who appear as dangerous, potential criminals, but rather the doctors, with their interpretive sovereignty over the unconscious, are more than just tempted to abuse their power. In a diagonal that shapes the image unstable, this social gradient runs through the film as a visual pattern. Thus, the dark shadows read as the socially undesirable, as an outsider that can be easily suppressed thanks to a closed institution. Mostly recorded in a studio, the interior shots also contribute to a cramped feeling in this "big spinning mill" in which "Matto", the madman, rules.
