Halberstadt in the summer of 1990: Maren (Sandra Hüller), Robert (Max Riemelt) and Volker (Ronald Zehrfeld) have known and loved each other since childhood. With the help of Robert's uncle, who works in a huge underground tunnel system just outside the village, they penetrate it. In one of the tunnels they come across the millions of the GDR: an infinite number of banknotes, stored here to rot. The three of them smuggle backpacks full of them out. Together with friends and people from the neighborhood, they develop a sophisticated system to legally exchange the now worthless money for goods – and to outsmart the rushing Westerners and their capitalism. Because if you're a little smart now, this summer can be not only a great adventure, but also the final turning point in life...

For her summer comedy "Two to One" about a group of friends who want to stop the triumphal march of capitalism, screenwriter and director Natja Brunckhorst was able to draw on true events: Millions of GDR marks were stored in underground vaults near the town of Halberstadt for the monetary union in 1990 – a total of almost 400 tons of banknotes. What is certain is that money was stolen from this tunnel. To this day, no one knows exactly how much. Natja Brunckhorst develops her story from this starting point: a humorous adventure in a time when everything seemed possible. It's about money and justice – and about what really counts in life: friendship and family.
