65: Inn Bike Trail, Partial Stage Guarda – Martina

The tour starts in the terraced village of Guarda, which is popular for its well-preserved townscape and the Schellen-Ursli story. After crossing the hamlet of Bos-cha, a welcome descent to Ardez follows to the next showcase Engadine village at the foot of the Steinsberg castle ruins.

The route continues along the old main road with constant views of the Lower Engadine Dolomites and up to Tarasp Castle until you reach the next sunny village, Ftan. The over 400-year-old mill on the edge of the village is still in operation and can be visited by appointment.

After the descent (about 400 metres in elevation) you reach the Lower Engadine capital of Scuol with its mineral water fountains. After passing through the two authentic villages of Scuol Sura and Scuol Sot, the trail continues along the eastern end of the village to the Inn River via Sur En and Strada to Martina. Between Scuol and the border crossing in Martina you will be rewarded by vistas of Sent and Ramosch with its castle ruin Tschanüff as well as of the highly elevated village of Tschlin and the hamlets Strada, Chaflur, San Niclà and Sclamischot.

Guarda and Ardez are the best preserved villages in the Lower Engadine. Old Engadine houses with their sgraffito decorations give both villages their character. Guarda, situated on a sunny terrace, with its «Schellen-Ursli» story, was awarded the Henri Louis Wakker Prize in 1975 for its intact village image. Ardez with the Steinsberg ruins is under European historic preservation.

Regular guided village tours are offered in both villages, as well as in Sent, Ramosch or Scuol.

The Engadin Scuol holiday region, nestled between the striking Silvretta peaks and the Engadine Dolomites, has preserved its cultural values and unspoilt nature. Whether hiking in the nearby Swiss National Park, rafting on the Inn River or playing golf – the region offers many possibilities. A visit to the Engadine Baths Scuol with its indoor and outdoor pools, sauna, steam bath and Roman-Irish bath provides a relaxing break during the bike tour. A walk through the two preserved parts of the village reflects the culture of the main village with its typical Engadine houses and mineral water fountains. Sent, famous for its baroque gables – «Senter Giebel» – has also retained its charm. Tarasp and Vulpera are situated in a slightly elevated, open location on the other side of the valley. Tarasp Castle, built in 1040, is visible from afar throughout the valley. The landmark of the Lower Engadine can be visited daily by guided tour.
