Description
Find out more about one of the most original mountain regions of Graubünden as you explore ancient church, valley and high-altitude trails. Hiking along the stream, you pass through hamlets, villages, forests and alpine meadows.
Take in the rural settlement landscape of the Safien valley with its dwellings, its stables and barns, its haylofts and alpine huts. The scattered homesteads typical of the Walser are among the characteristic features of the region, shaping its appearance.
High mountain ranges totally enclose the Safien valley to the south, east and west. To this day the passes that bridged these ranges already in ancient times remain passable only on foot or by mountain bike. And the valley itself only opened up to the north when its road was inaugurated in the late 19th century.
Geheimtipp
The route consists of three stages, each ideally suited as a one-day hike.
Sicherheitshinweis
The hiking season lasts from mid-June to mid-October. Depending on the snow conditions stages two and three may already be accessible to hikers in May and as late as November.
