Description

Before the construction of the cantonal road around 1895, the Avers could only be reached via a mule track. At that time, the majority of the population was oriented towards the Italian-speaking south, which is evidenced, among other things, by the many Romanesque field names. The new road, a monument to Italian road construction, changed the network of relationships. The hike starts in Cresta. There you first walk on the road for a short distance before the path branches off to the left and suddenly joins the old Averserstrasse. During the following five hours after Ausserferrera, there are larger and smaller natural stone bridges to discover, which have been carefully restored over the last ten years. For example, glacier mills can be discovered in the riverbed of the Averserrhein, and at Starlera on the opposite side of the valley there is a beautiful waterfall with a subtermal mineral spring. Further down in the valley there are finally some remnants of the former mining.
