Description
The trail starts at Isellas and first leads around Bever. Then it continues uphill following the right side of the Beverinbach. The long route runs at times directly along the bank of the bubbling stream. Occasionally, it also takes the cross-country skier on short detours through the quiet Swiss stone pine and larch forests that line the snowy slopes of the narrow valley.
The run through the Val Bever is accompanied by the Rhaetian Railway, which regularly passes behind the trees on the other side of the stream. On this traditional route, which celebrated its 115th anniversary in 2018, the red carriages head to the Albula Tunnel and down to Tiefencastel. To overcome around 125 meters of elevation from Bever, the trail steadily and gently climbs and only ends at the Gasthaus Spinas, a white-plastered building at the south portal of the tunnel with catering and overnight accommodation.
At the time of the pioneering tunnel construction, the hamlet of Spinas had up to 400 inhabitants, almost twice the size of Bever. Today, none of that remains: there are neither residential barracks, shops, nor a school. Only the historic station building, a private pavilion, another building, and the former post office—which today houses the guesthouse—bear witness to the bustling activity back then. Return to Bever follows the same route. Due to the gentle gradient, the return journey now serves as an easy downhill ride.
