As different as the small chapels and churches of Suraua are, they all have one thing in common: they all have beautiful wall and ceiling paintings by well-known and lesser-known artists. Whether Hans Ardüser, Johann Jakob Rieg, Fridolin Eggert or Hans Jakob Greutter, they are all represented.

Another highlight of the hike is crossing the suspension bridge over the Val da Tersnaus.

Description

At the start of the hike is the small Sogn Carlo Boromeo chapel in Uors. The interior of the chapel was painted by Hans Jakob Greutter in 1616.

After the visit, the hike begins. The old road leads down to the Valser Rhine, followed by a short climb up to the castle hill with the Sogn Luregn church. The castle has disappeared, only the tower still stands and has served as a church tower since 1515. There are also paintings by Hans Jakob Greutter in this church. The rocky outcrop on which the Sogn Luregn church stands is a powerful place, and powerful energies can be felt in the church in particular.

The route continues to Surcasti to the small chapel of Sogn Giusep, which has already been the victim of two fires. A special feature is the glazed niche on the left wall of the choir with the Virgin and Child dressed in precious brocade.

Cross the arched bridge back to Uors and follow the main road in the direction of Vals. After approx. 200 m, the hiking trail branches off to the left towards Tersnaus at the small niche for saints. In Tersnaus, the home town of mountain bike world champion Nino Schurter, you will find the church of Sogn Balun e Sontga Madleina. In the church you will find works by the reformed hiker painter Hans Ardüser and the Catholic painters Hans Jakob Greutter and Fridolin Eggert.

At the upper edge of the village, a dirt track leads to the 66-metre-long and 34-metre-high suspension bridge over the Val da Tersnaus. After the bridge, follow the hiking trail up to Runs and on to Camuns and the Sogn Gion church. From the Sogn Gion church you have a magnificent view of the whole of Lumnezia. The ceiling painting in the middle of the nave vault of the church was painted by Johann Jakob Rieg in 1696.

Take the same path back towards the suspension bridge. Shortly before the bridge, the hiking trail branches off down to Uors.

With the exception of the Sogn Luregn church in Surcasti, all churches and chapels are open from 09.00 - 17.00. You can obtain the key for the Sogn Luregn church from Pius Derungs, Tel 0041 81 931 14 46 or Simon Derungs 0041 77 477 83 61/0041 81 931 17 81. Please enquire in good time.

Geheimtipp

At the Valser Rhine between Uors and the castle hill and in Tersnaus at the entrance to the suspension bridge, there is a barbecue area where you can take a break and have a barbecue.

On the upper edge of the village of Surcasti, in the middle of a meadow, there is a massive and magnificent panoramic mountain. According to the Swiss Places of Power Research Center, the Panoramamenhir is the central stone of a large, supra-regional stone circle.

Sicherheitshinweis

The tour should not be undertaken in uncertain weather conditions. Weather changes are frequent in the mountains. If a rain front or similar is approaching during the hike, you should turn back in good time.
