Description

Approximately 2000 years ago, the Romans brought the chestnut tree to Bregaglia. The trees prospered in the valley's mild climate. The chestnut forest has an interpretive trail with information panels, which give visitors the opportunity to learn more about the local flora and fauna, the varieties of chestnuts and how they are cultivated.

A stroll through this magnificent forest is a unique and charming experience during every season. In the the spring, the trees are in bloom and their sweet perfume is in the air. In the summer, the large crowns of the chestnut trees are adorned with thick leaves and provide refreshing shade. In the fall, when the forest foliage turns yellow, red and orange, the chestnut pods fall to the ground and you can see the shiny brown fruit inside. From October to November, the chestnuts are collected from the groves and separated from their spiny pods for harvest.
