In about 20 days almost 300 km in length through Graubünden, mostly at the top of the altitude: A lonely "Haute Route" from the Austrian-Swiss border through the Engadine and Ticino to Lake Maggiore.

This tour I went like this in July 2021. Due to bad weather, I have defused the original planning in some places - but for the ambitious I also explain in my linked report the higher variants, which I have deleted due to residual snow or rain. Idea of the tour from the Instagrammer @toni.teutoni, elaboration in detail by me.

Attention: The route is NOT closed. In the Rheinwald a path is closed, but this hike only touches. In August 2021, everything is so walkable.

Description

Lonely valleys, idyllic mountain lakes, rocky passes, great panoramas: This tour from the Austrian border through Lower and Upper Engadine and further through Ticino requires a lot of stamina, but does not go beyond mountain hiking (T3-4) in difficulty. It is designed for overnight stays in a tent (yes, that's allowed), but can also be done as a hut hike. Many other hikers are not encountered here. Every 3-5 days you can also pass a shopping opportunity. So the nature experience is in the middle, but also the Rhaeto-Romanic and the Walser culture can be experienced in small, idyllic villages, at the end you reach the Italian-speaking area of Switzerland. The tour leads across many of the great Alpine passes, from the Flüela to Albula, Julier and Septimer passes. Behind San Bernardino, in good weather, the Sentiero Alpino Calanca can be built into the route – because of rain I bypassed it here in the valley. If you want, end the tour at a campsite on Lake Maggiore. Arrival by train / night train from Germany quite possible.

Sicherheitshinweis

Some passes can be difficult to walk in bad weather, high water levels of the streams or a lot of residual snow, but can usually be bypassed spontaneously. Poles and sturdy mountain boots recommended, according to preference also Grödel for snowfields (but I do not think necessary).

Ausrüstung

Tent, cooker, sleeping bag recommended, but with planning also feasible without as a hut hike. Climbing equipment not necessary.
