The smugglers' trail "Capel" in Maloja.

The topic of smuggling is particularly suitable in the area from Maloja to the neighboring Italian Val Malenco, as there is a concrete historical connection to the region. From the beginning of the 19th century until well into the 20th century, smuggling was an important source of income for the population. Especially in Bregaglia and the Engadine. A wide range of goods was smuggled, especially food and beverages, which made it possible to do good business and make life in the formerly very barren mountain valleys more pleasant.

The "Percorso dei Contrabbandieri - Capel, Maloja", extends over an approx. 1 1/2 hour hike from Maloja to the south. Through a larch forest you reach the Lägh da Bitabergh, where the smugglers' path ends and the pretty mountain lake invites you to rest and linger. Along the way, 17 posts provide insights into the life and adventures of the smugglers. In search of the hidden smuggler's goods, however, you also learn to orient yourself in nature or first aid recipes from the great outdoors.

Most of the time we are on the road as a family of four, but in between also in a different constellation or even alone. We enjoy the tours and are on the road comfortably, including many (photo) breaks. So it is never our goal to make a track as fast as possible, so that we are not completely exhausted in the end. The indicated hiking time is generally including a break, especially if we have a barbecue on the way, it can sometimes be longer. We have an average level of fitness and are connoisseurs. Our routes are sometimes shorter and sometimes longer, but we are on the road in wind and weather. We respect nature and never leave waste lying around.

Please contact me if you have any questions about the current tour, I will be happy to give you an answer as soon as possible. All tours marked with a "P" after the date in the title were done "privately" with the family, all with "G" accordingly in business, i.e. professionally.

Sicherheitshinweis

As I said, the path is demanding and you need good surefootedness and basic fitness. With many breaks, we needed 5.5 hours.

Directions

Immediately after the "entrance gate" to the smuggler's path, the adventurous part of the hike begins. The path is narrow and steep and you have to be sure-footed and have a good basic level of fitness! The path is sometimes described as easy, which I cannot confirm. Good footwear is strongly recommended, I would not do the trail with children who are too small. After the Lägh da Bitabergh, a wonderful mountain hiking trail leads steadily upwards and the knees and thighs are challenged, as you often have to balance from stone to stone. It doesn't hurt to take a little break from time to time:-) Arriving at Lägh da Cavloc you will be compensated for the exertions and if you want, you can let your feet cool down in the fresh mountain water or stop at the small restaurant. From here, the easiest way to return is on the road towards Mota d'Orden.
