Description
Starting point: Punt Muragl (1738 m) Switzerland
Length: 19.2 km
Maximum altitude: 2750 m just before Lej Muragl
Total difference in altitude uphill: 1588 m
Arrival: Punt Muragl (1738 m) Switzerland
Water along the way: NO
How to get there: from Sondrio take the SS38 to Tirano and after the Sanctuary of the Madonna, at the roundabout, turn left towards Campocologno. After crossing the Italy/Switzerland border in Campocologno follow the signs for Poschiavo and then continue to the Bernina pass. Continue towards Pontresina and after a while, you arrive at Punt Muragl where on the right there is a large free parking.
We leave the car in the parking lot and walk uphill in the direction of Muottas Muragl. There are 6 ° C. and the air is fresh, but it is a pleasure to feel it on the skin after the intense heat of the last few days at lower altitudes. After passing the houses of the small village begins the dirt road that climbs decisively. The cart track is very beautiful, well-kept and winds through a larch forest. Once at Alpe Muragl (1915 m) the vertical signs indicate on the right the path that leads to Chamanna Segantini while continuing on the cart track you arrive at Muottas Muragl. We continue on the cart track, cross the bridge on the funicular just at the moment when the red cabin is descending and photograph its daring descent. Along the way we stop several times to take photographs. We can clearly see Lake Staz while the other lakes are still partially hidden by vegetation. We continue along the cart track arriving near the arrival station of the funicular, in Muottas Muragl. The place is magnificent and the view sweeps over the lakes of Staz, Sankt Moitz, Champfèr, Silvaplana and Sils dominated by the peaks of the surrounding mountains. We notice on the left the Val Roseg with the Piz Roseg (3937 m), the Piz Sella (3511 m), the Gemelli (3501 m) and the Piz Gluschaint (3594 m) covered with snow. A couple more hairpin bends and we arrive at Muottas Muragl (2456 m), where a large group of people is doing yoga in an enviable location. From the parking lot to here we traveled 3.9 km overcoming a difference in height of 784 meters with an average gradient of 20.2%. Along the way we saw two cyclists in electric MTBs and one with the muscular MTB. For those who want to shorten the itinerary and the difference in height can use the funicular (ticket about 35 Swiss Francs), we had taken it in 2010 (LINK). The funicular was built in 1907 and in about 10 minutes covers a difference in height of 715 meters. There are no words to describe the view that presents itself from the terrace of Muottas Muralg. It's spectacular! In addition to what has been described above, we see in the distance the Pizzo Bernina (4049 m) and the Chamanna Segantini (2731m). We continue quietly on this comfortable path that leads us to ... continue on: http://www.gianolinibike.it/node/11368
