Hike along the Hinterrhein in the Rhine forest from Sufers to Hinterrhein
Details
Description
The valley hike in the Rhine forest along the young Hinterrhein begins in Sufers at the Sufner reservoir. The old transit route of the "viaSpluga" takes you to the ruins of Splügen Castle, the only castle complex in the Rhine forest, and on to the village of Splügen. Splügen is a typical Pass village with tanned Walser houses and Italian palazzi and was awarded the Wakker Prize by the Swiss Heritage Society in 1995 for its exemplary protection of the townscape.
In Splügen, the route crosses the bridge over the Hinterrhein and continues on the right side of the valley to Medels, Nufenen and Hinterrhein.
Hinterrhein is the oldest documented Walser settlement in the canton of Graubünden. Sights in Hinterrhein include the Alte Landbrugg and the Bachhuus-Chäller, a 300-year-old vaulted cellar that has been spruced up and converted into a cozy pub serving food and drink by prior arrangement.
The villages of the Rheinwald are on the PostBus line. You can walk from village to village as you wish.
